Fall 2026 Knight Distinguished Lecture Jessica Horton, University of Delaware: “Arch, Mound, Basket"
Professor Jessica L. Horton is a scholar of modern and contemporary Native North American art. Her research and teaching center Indigenous artists in a global story of modernity, following the transcultural movement of people, art, and ideas. Professor Horton has published widely on the relationships connecting Indigenous knowledge, creative practice, and theories of ecology, diplomacy, and globalization.
In 2019, Chalon Ohlone artist Christine Howard Sandoval began making large-scale drawings and sculptures from hand-mixed adobe mud. The works study how ephemeral Native arts such as basketry and earthworks inflected Spanish mission architectures and afterlives in California. Framed by Sandoval’s project, this talk looks to erosion and decay as pathways for California Indigenous arts to participate in the regeneration of abundant life against the odds.
